Monday, May 24th, 2010

Some people think that lock bumping can make an impossible entry easy. There are many situations where it is a better option than lock picking, especially when physical entry of pick tools is impossible. For them, bumping is just as effective or even more so then picking. It should be done properly that it does no damage to the client’s property. And so, having multiple entry techniques and skills increases a locksmith’s efficiency.

A bump key is easy to manufacture because all it requires is the lowest cuts on any given key blank, provided that it is a pin tumbler lock.

Some locksmiths are hesitant to do bumping because they might not get paid. However, bumping is just one technique that might help their clients. They can damage a lock if they hit the bump key too hard and it usually does not work well when it is hit too hard.

It is important for a locksmith to know about how the lock works to make it easier to get it open. Picking is another option and bumping comes in handy but it does not work 100% all the time. Thus, it is important to have an arsenal of the things to try.

Some people, on the other hand, think that bumping a lock is unprofessional and should never be performed by a locksmith. It should always be used as a last resort. They believe that there are clients that has a tendency to do it themselves once they see the locksmith do it. Also, bumping has the tendency to damage the plug in the lock and often the faceplate too. So, before locksmiths resort into bumping, it is important to have the proper knowledge and skills by reading it first and decide whether or not it is a good technique to learn.
